Boundary No Boundary

The Boundary

The present Wakefield District boundary was set in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, when the county borough of Wakefield merged with the West Riding municipal boroughs of CastlefordOssett, and Pontefract, the urban districts of FeatherstoneHemsworth

HorburyKnottingleyNormanton and Stanley, along with Wakefield Rural District and parts of Hemsworth Rural District and Osgoldcross Rural District.

The boundary is a linear space that physically exists but has little actual presence. Does where you call home, either side of this invisible line, affect how you think about yourself?

Are you from Wakefield, Leeds, Barnsley etc? Many are unaware of where the actual line is.

For some, the creation of the boundary in 1974 is still a contentious issue as it created separation in some communities and ties in others.

This project is about not letting invisible boundaries divide people - be they political, administrative or geographical.
